:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from GWA1225 -- A worthy memento ~ : I recently listened to a superbly-done audio version of this classic by one of my lifetime-favorite authors (I’m 71) and was just bowled over by how much I enjoyed it. I decided I wanted a printed copy to keep around to pick up and read favorite passages and chapters from, and picked this rather expensive paperback because it seemed to be a determined effort to recreate in affordable fashion a copy of one of the early illustrated editions. I was and am delighted with the result; though a paperback, it has a quality feel and the illustrations, created a century-plus ago, are just perfect and add a delightful touch to Twain’s fascinating, entertaining travelogue. I liked it well enough to give copies to my brother and to a son. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2018 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Dorothy M Larson -- Total waste! This is far from a valid edition. Don’t buy : This seemed like a poor translation from a strange language and is hardly understandable. Words are missing and the text is garbled. I obtained a print copy of Roughing It and the language is clear and understandable, quite unlike the ebook that I purchased. A total waste of money. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- NOT ROUGHING IT--TEXT IS GIBBERISH : I don't know where the text comes from, but the sentences don't make sense, and it is definitely not Mark Twain's Roughing It. Maybe it is a poor English translation of Roughing It translated into a different language. Whatever--it's useless. It may have a picture of Mark Twain on the cover, but nothing else related to him! It appears to be a translation into English from a prior translation into some other language. It makes for very strange and incomprehensible reading. I'm going to try to get a refund. I did not remember Twain being this long winded when I was a kid reading Tom Sawyer. He took 2 1/2 pages to describe the first coyote he saw coming west. Gave to book to Goodwill. It's Mark Twain on an extended camping trip, so how can this bad? All of his travelogues are gems and this is no exception. Lake Tahoe, gold and silver mining, caught in a blinding blizzard and more. History and literature has already decided on his merits! having said that, this is the most entertaining autobiographical view of the West in the 1800's, a true first person recollection....it has somethings like 70 chapters!
